The Department of English at Prajyoti Niketan College organized an invited talk The Commodification and Consumption of the “Other”: A Critique on 20th November 2024. Dr. M. S. Veena, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Government Arts and Science College, Ollur was the resource person.
Dr. Veena began the talk by contextualizing the concept of the “Other” within the frameworks of postcolonialism, cultural studies, and critical theory. She elaborated on how dominant cultures commodify and consume marginalized identities—be it through literature, media, or socio-political narratives. Drawing examples from diverse global and Indian contexts, she highlighted how the “Other” is objectified and commercialized, often stripped of individuality and agency in the process.
The session was highly interactive, with students and faculty engaging in a lively Q&A session following the talk. Dr. Veena’s responses further deepened the participants’ understanding of the topic and inspired critical reflection on their own consumption of cultural narratives. 41 students participated in the event
