Psychology is one of the most popular courses at Prajyoti Niketan College. The Department of Psychology was established at Prajyoti Niketan College in the year 1995, with the B.Sc. Psychology course, which was regarded as the pioneer department in this field under the University of Calicut. MSc. Clinical Psychology as a unique professional course was established for the first time under the University of Calicut in 2001. The Department was recognized as a Research Centre under University of Calicut in the year 2008.

The Department has always provided excellent training for the professional development of students and consistently ranked as a top department in the nation because of the excellence of the program and the commitment of our faculty and students. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programs are recognized for pioneering contributions in classroom and research education, as well as innovative experiential learning. All the faculty members of the Department are recognized as Research Guides by the University of Calicut. At present, the Department comprises of five permanent faculties of Assistant Professor Grade. Our students could always grab University Ranks for both B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses. Students from Bachelor’s Degree onwards are thoroughly trained in the theoretical as well as practical application of psychology. The Department is associated with many schools, NGOs and hospitals with mental health units and industrial settings in order to provide maximum exposure to enhance the skills required for psychological practice in future. Students are given opportunities to get exposed to the current social happenings in order to develop proper psychological mindedness. They get to interact with eminent people in the field of psychology through periodical seminars and workshops
conducted by the Department. Each student is provided with a mentor, with whom they can discuss their difficulties and concerns in an effective way. The department was led by two well-known personalities, Dr. Varghese Paul and Dr. Monsy Edward, in the past.

The Department is proud of its professionally well-placed alumni who have always stayed in touch with their alma mater. They often interact with teachers and students in order to enrich them with knowledge about new ideas, opportunities and challenges in the field of Psychology. When the state of Kerala faced crises like the devastating floods in 2018 and 2019 and the Covid -19 Lockdown in 2020, the faculty and students were involved in providing responsible social service and crises management programmes. The Department imparts excellent training to the students for various competitive examinations and places special emphasis on their overall personality development. Being an alumnus of the same Department I am proud to say that Prajyoti provided the best launch pad for my career. Initial trainings are crucial for those who aspire for a successful career as a clinician, practitioner, counsellor or teacher.
