DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

The inception of the Undergraduate Programme in English Language and Literature in 1995, marked the beginning of a pioneering effort to enable students from diverse backgrounds experience a plethora of textualities. Embedded in a firm belief in empowerment through education and flagged by the herculean teamwork of dedicated faculty members, the voyage down the decades has been sustained by a passionate sense of belonging. In its pursuit of excellence, the department imparts knowledge that is aligned with the holistic vision of the College, enabling the progressive ideas and intellectual curiosity evoked by the New Humanities to foster critical thinking for a value based outcome. The intellectual, spiritual and cultural milieu provides a base for students to be equipped to return to the evolving world as committed, conscientious citizens.

The diaspora of the department of English owes its heritage to the cumulative and orchestrated efforts of a handful of great administrators and teachers. With immense gratitude and warm memories, we pay due heritage to the service rendered by Dr B Hariharan (former HoD), Dr Sr Sophy(former HoD), the late Dr Dhanya Menon (English), Dr Jose J Nedumpara (Political Science ), Dr Babu Paul (English ), Mrs C M Jyothi (Journalism ) and the long line of guest lecturers who have served here. At present, the department is headed by Dr Mary Paul Chakkachamparambil and comprises of Dr Simi Varghese (Journalism), Mrs Jeetha Johny (English), Dr Binoj Jose (Indian Constitution and Politics) and Mr Albin Shaju Paul (English).

The ambience created by the department is conducive not only to advanced learners but also to slow learners. Rooted in a value based culture, the learning environment focuses on an outcome based education. A student- centric approach is adopted where the teacher shifts from a voice of authority to a guide, a mentor, a facilitator. The methods adopted to disseminate information and to mould the young men and women include seminar presentations, assignments, role playing, peer teaching, remedial teaching, mentoring, gender sensitization classes, ICT enabled learning, Language Lab sessions, academic extension programmes, academic outreach programmes, encouraging slow learners through participation in SSP (Student Support Program), inspiring high achievers through participation in WWS (Walk With a Scholar) and providing ample opportunities through the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) etc. The department also conducts an Add On course – ‘Communication Skills in English.’ Student initiatives include peer learning , interviewing celebrities, advertising their own products , mock election , mock parliament ,Green Initiatives, humanitarian programmes , promoting Performing Arts, hand- written magazine, wall magazine, publishing features in newspapers etc. The cumulative effort of the staff and students is to foster academic excellence and character formation. Our long term vision is to nurture and mould students to serve the society at large and the nation as a whole.
